Yamauchi is a world inhabited by the Yatagarasu, a race of ravens who shapeshift into humans. The land is divided into four regions, each ruled by a noble family.

When in human looking form, a yatagarasu may partially transform, their clothing that of a "feather robe" which looks like simple black garments traditional to the world. It is considered unseemly to wear it in general but especially before nobility. There is intense social hierarchy inclusive of the "contractual" indentureship of yatagarasu who have lost the means to live or forfeited it for some reason. Hill crows are country crows, and court crows nobility. The imperial court is full of conspirators and assassins. Despite rumor being he is "a true kin'u (golden raven)", the prince is regarded as "an idiot" and is surrounded by many powerful enemies. Much of this political unrest can be attributed to the fact that he was given precedence as heir over his elder brother, who is more well liked and generally supported as someone who would have been the perfect ruler.
